Tarmac is one of the most common materials used within public and private forecourts. Engineered to withstand the weather and elements, hardwearing and lasting tarmac surfaces can often be tailored to meet a specific requirement.
Part of this involves the different formulations which can be chosen. While there are literally dozens of variations, this substance can generally be broken down into two categories based upon density.
Open-Graded Tarmac
There are times when tarmac forecourts are comprised of what is known as an open-graded aggregate. This essentially signifies that there are relatively few smaller particles within the mixture. Thus, open-graded forecourts are permeable – avoiding pooling or puddling.
Close-Graded Tarmac
Other forecourts are comprised of a more dense and uniform type of tarmac, known as close-graded aggregate. This variety contains many small particles which are generally three millimetres in size or smaller. This is a less permeable surface, allowing water to drain off, as opposed to penetrating into the ground.
